Selling professionally since

Ian has worked in professional sales since 1998 and brings more than 26 years of real sales experience to every financial adviser sales training session. He was trained in sales with Vodafone, held senior sales roles with Ideal Boilers and Hepworth Building Products, and later progressed to Sales Director.

As a salesman, Ian has helped grow sales by more than £40 million using the same clarity-first approach he now teaches to finacial advisors, business owners, SMEs and sales teams. Since moving into sales training, he has helped more than 300 businesses improve sales conversations, communicate value more clearly and increase conversions. The most common goals are improving discovery calls, communicating value more clearly, increasing conversion rates and helping prospects make confident buying decisions.

His sales training courses for the financial industry focus on clearer sales communication, stronger value conversations, consultative selling and helping clients make confident buying decisions without pressure or scripts.

Ian is also a paid keynote speaker, an FSB annual bootcamp speaker in Manchester and a Cambridge University speaker. Over the past 26+ years, he has worked across financial services, engineering, manufacturing, telecoms, cybersecurity, IT, SaaS, education and other B2B sectors.

Every idea taught in Ian's Sales training courses for financial advisers has been developed through real commercial sales experience, tested with clients and refined over decades, rather than taken from sales theory or generic training manuals.

"I have been using Ian as a Sales Coach for two months now. I have always been able to convert prospects who come via a warm referral, but I have struggled to convert cold prospects that come through marketing efforts. After 9 weeks, I am starting to see more conversions and better relationships. I have written £5,000 of new business since starting his course. Also, my confidence has increased."

"I’ve worked with Ian a handful of times over the past year and he’s certainly helped my presentation skills when having discussions with clients. Ian is honest with his feedback and is able to present it to you without feeling criticised, which is a skill in itself. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Ian for presentation and sales training."

"I’ve just attended Ian’s webinar and it was amazing! He really makes you think about how selling is not about selling, and how simple it can actually be. I found it thought-provoking and highly entertaining, and he is passionate about selling without selling and helping people instead. Highly recommended."

In 1998, I graduated from Nottingham University with a Maths degree, no sales experience and absolutely no confidence in selling.

A Christmas temp job in a phone shop changed everything. Instead of learning sales techniques, I became obsessed with one question:

How do I make it easy for customers to buy?

That simple idea helped me become the UK's top phone seller in that chain and launched a sales career spanning 27 years.

Today, I help financial planners, wealth managers and IFAs across the UK close more deals, upsell with ease and confidently charge more through clearer communication and better buying decisions WITHOUT pushy selling techniques.

FAQ About Sales Training For Financial Advisers — Click To Open

Sales training for financial advisers is about far more than learning how to sell. It helps clients understand the value of advice so they feel confident making important financial decisions. Whether you are an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA), Chartered Financial Planner or wealth manager, clients may be considering pensions, investments, retirement planning, inheritance tax, protection, cashflow planning or long-term wealth preservation. They need clarity before they commit.

Many financial planning businesses lose opportunities because prospects struggle to see a meaningful difference between firms. When qualifications, services and adviser propositions appear similar, clients may compare adviser charges rather than the quality of the advice, ongoing servicing and long-term relationship. Financial adviser sales training improves the whole client journey, from the first enquiry and discovery meeting through to suitability meetings, recommendation meetings and implementation.

Advisers learn to ask better questions, communicate financial planning value instead of leading with products and explain why their service is worth the investment. The result is stronger trust, fewer fee objections, more confident decisions and more clients choosing your financial planning services for the right reasons.

Many financial advisers do not realise they have a conversion problem because enquiries are still arriving. The warning signs appear later in the financial advice sales process. Prospects attend financial planning consultations but do not return, say “I’ll think about it”, delay implementation, question ongoing advice fees or choose another adviser despite receiving a similar proposition.

These challenges affect Independent Financial Advisers, financial planners, wealth managers, Restricted Advisers and financial services firms of every size. The issue may arise during pension advice sales conversations, investment discussions, retirement planning meetings, protection reviews or conversations with couples making joint decisions. Often, the quality of the advice is not the problem. Clients simply have not understood the difference between your firm and another provider.

IFA sales coaching helps improve the financial services client conversations that shape buying decisions. Advisers learn how to build trust earlier, explain value clearly, handle fee objections naturally and reduce the uncertainty that causes prospects to hesitate. This creates a more consistent approach to converting financial advice enquiries without pressure or unsuitable sales tactics.

Every financial advice business has a different client journey, so every financial adviser sales training programme is tailored around your firm, your advisers and the way you attract and convert clients. Before training begins, I review your financial advice sales process, adviser proposition, typical fact finds, discovery meetings and the points where suitable opportunities are being lost.

The programme develops practical adviser communication skills rather than generic closing techniques. We work on stronger discovery questions, clearer financial planning consultations, consultative selling for financial advisers, communicating financial planning value, handling objections in financial advice and explaining ongoing advice fees. We can also improve suitability meetings, implementation meetings, annual reviews, introducer relationships and financial adviser business development.

The content reflects genuine conversations with business owners, retirees, families, vulnerable clients, first-time investors and high-net-worth clients. It can include pension advice, investments, protection, cashflow planning, inheritance tax planning and intergenerational planning. The objective is to improve conversion rates, strengthen recurring revenue and turn more suitable enquiries into committed, long-term clients.

Yes, but not because advisers are taught to become more persuasive. Sales training for financial advisers increases revenue by improving the conversations that happen before a client decides to proceed. When prospects understand the value of your advice, adviser proposition and ongoing service, they are more likely to appoint your firm and less likely to compare advisers purely on charges.

Even a modest improvement in conversion rates can make a significant difference. Winning a small number of additional financial planning clients each year can increase recurring revenue, assets under advice and the lifetime value of your client bank without requiring more marketing spend. This is particularly valuable for wealth management firms and financial planning businesses with a steady flow of qualified enquiries.

Financial adviser sales coaching also helps protect profitability. Advisers learn how to explain expertise, financial planning value, ongoing servicing and long-term outcomes in a way that supports your fees. The result is stronger client trust, more higher-value financial planning clients and sustainable growth based on value rather than discounting.

Traditional sales training often fails financial advisers because it is designed for short, transactional buying decisions. Financial advice is different. Clients may be making decisions about retirement, investments, pensions, family wealth or protection that affect decades of their lives. They may involve a spouse, accountant, solicitor or other family members before agreeing to proceed.

Scripted closes and pressure tactics do not reflect how Independent Financial Advisers, financial planners or wealth managers build trust. They are also unsuitable for FCA-regulated advice, where conversations must remain clear, fair and focused on the client’s circumstances. Advisers need a compliant way to help people understand their options rather than techniques that make clients feel pushed.

My financial services sales training focuses on buyer psychology for financial advisers, clearer communication and better questions. It helps advisers simplify complex information, communicate value instead of products and remove the uncertainty that causes delays. This produces more natural, compliance-friendly conversations and a better experience for both the adviser and the client.

Yes. Sales training for financial advisers is available online via Zoom or face-to-face anywhere in the UK. The right format depends on your financial services firm, the size of your team and how your advisers prefer to learn, but the content, practical exercises and intended outcomes remain the same.

Online IFA sales training is ideal for firms with advisers across several offices or home-based teams that want to minimise travel and disruption. Face-to-face financial planner sales training works particularly well when you want advisers, paraplanners and business development staff together to practise fact finds, discovery meetings, suitability meetings and real client conversations.

Every programme is tailored to your advice model, target clients and adviser proposition. Whether your firm specialises in retirement planning, investments, pensions, protection, cashflow planning or wealth management, the objective is to improve adviser communication skills, create consistent client journeys and help more suitable prospects move forward with confidence.

Sales training is suitable for financial advice businesses of all sizes, from self-employed IFAs and boutique financial planning practices to national wealth management firms and larger financial services groups. It supports businesses generating clients through referrals, professional introducers, seminars, digital marketing, centres of influence or proactive adviser business development.

I work with Independent Financial Advisers, Chartered Financial Planners, Restricted Advisers, Wealth Managers, Retirement Specialists, Investment Advisers, Protection Advisers, Mortgage and Protection Advisers, Employee Benefits Consultants and Financial Coaching firms. Pension Transfer Specialists may also benefit where the focus is on clear, compliant communication rather than persuading unsuitable clients to proceed.

Each firm has a different target market, client bank and advice process. Wealth management sales training for high-net-worth clients will differ from protection adviser sales training or mortgage and protection sales skills. Every example and exercise is therefore built around the conversations your team actually has, making the training immediately relevant.

Yes. Fee pressure often arises because prospective clients do not yet understand the value behind the advice and ongoing service. When two IFAs, financial planners or wealth managers appear to offer similar qualifications, reports and recommendations, clients naturally start comparing adviser charges rather than outcomes.

Sales training for IFAs helps create value before fees become the centre of the conversation. Advisers learn to use stronger client discovery meetings, uncover personal priorities and explain the value of advice, cashflow planning, implementation and annual reviews. This makes it easier for clients to understand what they are paying for beyond a product recommendation or suitability report.

The objective is not to persuade clients to spend more than they need to. It is to help them recognise the expertise, ongoing servicing, accountability and long-term planning your firm provides. This leads to fewer fee objections, stronger margins and more clients choosing your financial planning business because they trust the process rather than because you were the cheapest option.

Most financial adviser sales training focuses on closing techniques or rehearsed objection handling. My approach is different. Clients make better financial decisions when conversations are clearer, simpler and centred on helping them understand their choices. The adviser’s role is to remove confusion, not increase pressure.

The training combines more than 27 years of professional sales experience with practical buyer psychology. It helps IFAs, financial planners and wealth managers understand why prospects hesitate, continue comparing firms or say “I’ll think about it”. Advisers learn to ask better questions, communicate financial planning value and guide clients towards confident decisions in a natural, compliance-friendly way.

Every programme is tailored around your client journey, adviser proposition and target market. This may include high-net-worth clients, business owners, retirees, families, vulnerable clients or couples making joint decisions. The result is practical financial adviser sales coaching that fits real advice conversations rather than forcing advisers to follow generic scripts.

Absolutely. No two financial advice firms operate in exactly the same way, so every programme is shaped around your business, advisers and client journey. A retirement planning practice has different conversations from a wealth management firm serving high-net-worth clients, a protection specialist or a financial planning business focused on company directors.

Before training begins, I take time to understand your advice model, ideal clients, adviser proposition, referral sources and where opportunities are being lost. We can review discovery meetings, fact finds, recommendation meetings, suitability meetings, implementation conversations, annual reviews and how ongoing advice fees are explained.

This ensures every exercise reflects the situations your advisers face. The result is financial planner sales coaching that feels immediately relevant, whether the objective is converting financial advice enquiries, strengthening introducer relationships, winning higher-value financial planning clients or creating a consistent approach across several advisers and offices.

Yes. Fee objections are usually a symptom rather than the real problem. Prospective clients often question charges because they have not yet understood the difference between receiving a recommendation and entering a long-term financial planning relationship. When adviser propositions appear similar, comparing adviser charges can seem like the most logical decision.

Financial adviser sales training helps build value before fees are discussed. Advisers learn how to understand each client’s goals, concerns and priorities, then clearly explain the value of research, cashflow planning, suitability reports, implementation, ongoing servicing and annual reviews. Conversations become centred on outcomes and reassurance rather than a percentage or fixed fee alone.

Rather than providing scripted answers, the training helps reduce objections in the first place. When clients understand the service, discussions about initial and ongoing advice fees become easier. This supports healthier margins, higher implementation rates and more clients choosing your firm because they recognise its long-term value.

Yes. Many financial advisers, financial planning businesses and wealth management firms I work with are already successful. The objective is not simply to generate more enquiries. It may be to improve conversion rates, attract better-suited clients, strengthen recurring revenue or make the financial advice sales process more consistent as the firm grows.

Established firms can rely heavily on referrals, a small number of centres of influence or the experience of one or two senior advisers. IFA sales coaching creates a clearer approach that can be used across the whole team, making results less dependent on individual personalities. It can also help new advisers communicate the established firm’s value more confidently.

Whether you want to improve financial planning consultations, deepen introducer relationships, increase assets under advice or develop the lifetime value of your client bank, sales coaching for financial advisers helps create clearer conversations and better buying experiences. Small improvements can produce meaningful gains in retention, referrals and profitable growth.

Sales training for financial advisers is not limited to people with “sales” in their job title. Anyone involved in attracting, advising, reassuring or converting prospective clients can benefit. In many firms, financial services client conversations are led by directors, IFAs, Chartered Financial Planners, wealth managers, associate advisers, paraplanners, business development managers and client relationship teams.

The programme can support Independent Financial Advisers, Restricted Advisers, Retirement Specialists, Investment Advisers, Protection Advisers, Mortgage and Protection Advisers, Employee Benefits Consultants and Financial Coaching firms. It is also useful for teams responsible for professional introducers, referral partnerships and other centres of influence.

A consistent approach helps every person communicate the same adviser proposition from the first enquiry through discovery meetings, fact finds, suitability meetings, implementation and ongoing reviews. That consistency builds trust, improves the client experience and helps more suitable prospects choose your financial planning or wealth management services with confidence.

Absolutely. Smaller financial planning businesses often rely on the owner or a handful of experienced advisers to win and retain clients. Whether you are a self-employed IFA, boutique wealth manager or growing financial planning firm, improving client conversations can have a major impact without requiring a large sales department.

Smaller firms may compete with national financial services brands that have larger marketing budgets and dedicated business development teams. IFA sales training helps level the playing field by improving how advisers explain their proposition, build trust, communicate ongoing value and handle fee objections. It allows the firm’s expertise and personal service to become clearer.

The principles work across pensions, investments, retirement planning, inheritance tax planning, protection, wealth preservation and cashflow planning. Clearer conversations help smaller firms attract suitable clients, strengthen referrals and compete through expertise, service and long-term relationships rather than trying to be the lowest-cost adviser.

Every financial services firm is different, so results depend on the market, the quality of enquiries and how consistently the training is applied. Rather than making unrealistic promises, the aim is to improve the conversations that influence client decisions throughout the financial advice process.

Financial advisers, IFAs, financial planners and wealth managers commonly report better-quality discovery meetings, stronger conversion rates, fewer fee objections and greater confidence when discussing value. Firms may also improve implementation rates, referrals, introducer relationships, recurring revenue and the lifetime value of their client bank because clients understand the service more clearly.

Whether your business focuses on pensions, retirement planning, investments, protection, inheritance tax planning, cashflow planning or wealth management, the training provides practical skills that continue to support advisers after the session. Better conversations lead to better financial decisions, stronger long-term relationships and more clients choosing your firm for its expertise and adviser proposition rather than simply comparing fees.

I did Ian Genius’s Turbocharge Your Sales training, and what I can say is that the training is absolutely incredible. It’s very easy to understand and very easy to apply. It’s really fun, interactive, and straight to the point. He helps you nail your message in a way that cuts out all the noise and gets straight to what you should actually be saying to your potential clients. So if you don’t know how to present yourself, or you feel that the way you’re presenting yourself probably isn’t working but you don’t know how else to do it, then definitely speak to Ian Genius.

Sales is one of those things, it’s a tricky one isn’t it? businesses don't like talking about money, they don't like selling, they don't want to be pushy. After just one hour with Ian, everything changed. He explained how we could market ourselves by introducing VALUE to our clients. And the way he explained it was so simple, that it suddenly clicked in our minds and managed to get six new clients off the back of just one hour with Ian. Ian has given us clarity of our value. Thank you Ian

I already knew Ian was talented because of the engaging content he publishes. However, it was only after spending time in a training session with him that I truly understood how valuable he is to my business. If you are struggling to achieve the sales figures you want – or if you find yourself being "ghosted" by prospects as soon as you have sent a quote – you need to speak to him. The value here goes beyond simple clarity. There is no "tricksy" sales nonsense involved. Instead, Ian provides logical, straightforward frameworks that are incredibly easy to follow. It is no exaggeration to say that the training I did with Ian revolutionised my approach. I have been in business and involved in sales for a long time, and I only wish I had met him when I first started. It would have saved me a great deal of heartache and frustration.

“From first meeting Ian at a network event I knew he was someone that I would enjoy working with. His passion and knowledge of his subject is infectious. I’ve had numerous sessions with Ian regarding the topic of Sales and found Ian to be very empathetic on this issues of selling and how to approach an often difficult subject. The concept of explaining issues as a choice: 6 year old easy or really difficult is brilliantly effective and really helps demonstrate how important it is to make the “selling simple” Ian clearly has many real world experiences that he draws on anecdotally to explain his concepts. He uses humour appropriately to help deliver his sessions. His videos on LinkedIn whilst being humorous are very cleverly put together and really engaging in to the issues of selling - Ian clearly has a knack of making the concepts enjoyable I would wholeheartedly recommend Ian as someone to work with if you want to demystify the concept of sales and how you can improve your techniques for engaging with customers.” I'd like to add that Ian has continued to be a source of support with Sales and it cannot be over emphasised the importance of simplifying concepts for people and how effective that is when dealing with customers, something that Ian excels at.

I have been using Ian as a Sales Coach for two months now. I have always been able to convert prospects who come via a warm referral, but I have struggled to convert cold prospects that come through marketing efforts. I started by booking one of his value hour sessions, and I then decided to book his twelve-week course. If you are a financial advisor (pensions, investments, mortgages, etc.), then Ian is definitely for you. Ian, as he loves to remind you, has a degree in mathematics (only joking Ian!). He understands number-based concepts extremely well, he also teaches you how to communicate numbers to people in a simple way. As he says, confused people don't buy. Ian also works very hard to understand the value of your particular service or product. The more you give Ian in terms of what you do, how you do it, and why you do it, the more he helps you. After 9 weeks, I am starting to see more conversions and better relationships. Also, my confidence has increased.

I have worked with Ian on many occasions, and attended his 1-2-1 and group training sessions, both of which I will continue to do as my business evolves. Ian has completely changed my approach to selling. His message is straightforward, no jargon, no complicated language. He has taught me the benefit of keeping things simple, and it has been beneficial to me in respect of the confidence to persuade people to buy what I offer rather than sell to them. I highly recommend Ian - he provides great advice, it's cost-effective, and it provides value no matter what size of business you represent.

I am near completion on Ian's Effective Sales Conversations course, in fact we should be finished however Ian felt that he needed to give me a few more sessions to ensure I'm comfortable. I'm not exaggerating when I say it’s transformed how I approach my pitch and my approach to new business development. Before the course, my pitch often felt like a price list with a bit of polish. Now, it's a clear, confident explanation of the value I bring, without the fluff or the hard sell. Ian's given me a simple, practical framework (bespoke to my business ) that’s helped me cut through the noise and speak directly to what matters to potential clients. This training didn’t just improve my pitch, it made it land. If you’re tired of being seen as “just another option” and want to stand out for the right reasons, I’d absolutely recommend working with Ian, he's a genius (excuse the pun). Thank you so much Ian 🙏
Sales Training For Financial Advisers & Financial Services +

Sales training for financial advisers helps advisers, financial planners, IFAs and wealth managers communicate value more clearly, build client confidence and convert more enquiries into long-term clients without pressure selling. Whether you run an independent financial advice practice, financial planning firm, wealth management business or a larger financial services company, practical sales training can improve the quality of prospect conversations, client meetings and new business development.

Financial adviser sales training is particularly valuable because clients are rarely buying a simple product. They may be making decisions about pensions, investments, retirement planning, protection, mortgages, tax planning or their family's long-term financial future. Prospects need to understand both the advice and the value of working with you. Better questioning, clearer explanations and stronger value communication can help financial advisers reduce hesitation, handle objections naturally and improve client conversion rates.

Sales training for financial planners focuses on turning complex financial planning conversations into clear buying decisions. This includes improving discovery meetings, fact-finding conversations, initial consultations, financial planning presentations, recommendation meetings and follow-up conversations. For financial planners who provide comprehensive or ongoing advice, being able to explain the value of financial planning clearly can also make it easier to justify advice fees and build profitable long-term client relationships.

IFA sales training can support independent financial advisers looking to generate more new business, improve enquiry conversion and develop stronger relationships with prospective clients. Training can cover consultative selling, sales questioning techniques, communicating adviser value, handling fee objections, gaining commitment, asking for referrals and following up prospects without sounding pushy. The aim is not to turn professional advisers into traditional salespeople, but to make it easier for suitable clients to understand the benefits of taking advice.

Wealth management sales training helps wealth managers, investment advisers, private client advisers and relationship managers communicate effectively with affluent and high-net-worth clients. When prospective clients are considering investment management, retirement planning, estate planning or wider wealth planning services, trust and clarity are essential. Stronger client conversations can help wealth management firms demonstrate value, differentiate their service and win new clients while maintaining a professional, advice-led approach.

Financial services sales training is also suitable for businesses operating across the wider financial services sector. This can include financial advice firms, wealth management companies, mortgage advisers, insurance brokers, protection specialists, pension providers, investment businesses, fintech companies and other firms selling financial products or professional financial services. Training can be tailored around your clients, proposition, sales process and commercial objectives rather than relying on generic sales scripts.

For financial services businesses with larger teams, financial services sales skills training can help create greater consistency across business development, adviser and client-facing teams. Training can support prospecting, lead conversion, consultative selling, client needs analysis, questioning skills, objection handling, negotiation, presenting recommendations, communicating fees, cross-selling appropriate services and developing existing client relationships.

Many advisers lose potential clients not because their advice is poor, but because the prospect does not fully understand the difference the advice could make. Clearer financial services sales conversations help prospects understand what they are paying for, why professional advice matters and what they gain from working with an adviser, planner or wealth manager. Greater clarity can mean fewer I'll think about it responses, fewer prospects disappearing after an initial meeting and more confident client decisions.

Training can be delivered for individual advisers, small financial planning practices, IFA firms, wealth management teams and larger financial services organisations. Options include one-to-one sales coaching, financial adviser sales workshops, sales training courses for financial advisers, team sales training, financial adviser business development training and live online sales training for financial services teams throughout the UK.

Whether you are looking for sales training for financial advisers, financial planners, IFAs, wealth managers or financial services professionals, or sales training for financial services teams, the objective is the same: clearer client conversations, stronger value communication, greater confidence discussing fees, higher conversion rates and sustainable business growth without relying on aggressive or pushy sales techniques.
